Building Character: The Power of Action in Life and Business

“Kick Ass. Take Names. Let the paramedics sort them out.”

Great phrase. Military origins mixed with The Program. It has some cultural heritage too from the book Youngblood upon research. Wall St used part of it.

I don’t recall if I heard this or if I merged the two phrases together. Kudos to whoever said it first. It has been a foundation for a lot of my life.

Action Trumps Inaction

✅ A lot of the time I’ve learned you just need to buck up and do the work. And I’m telling myself this just as much as I write the words for you to internalize.

✅ I’ve found action trumps a lot of self doubt, limiting beliefs, failures (which are NOT bad), lessons learned, and perceived negative situations.

❓ So, how do you show up the next day, the next hour, the next minute?

✅ Character. Here are 3 quotes that have taught me about character.

“The true test of a man’s character is what he does when no one is watching.”

“I didn’t say you needed to be better than everyone else. But you gotta try. That’s what character is. It’s in the trying.”

“No. Try not. Do… or do not. There is no try.”

Again, Take Action

✅ You just DO. You still have a larger plan. You still have the Big Rocks, Priorities, Big 3, whatever you want to call your objectives.

❓ What is the ONE THING that moves the needle and makes everything else irrelevant.

❌ There is no magic bullet.

❌ There is no secret sauce.

❌ There is no supreme psychology element.

✅ Sometimes it is Plan Do Have.

✅ Sometimes it is Do Plan Have.

✅ Sometimes it is just Plan Do and then when that does not work it becomes Do Plan. Maybe it eventually becomes just Do.

You know, you Pivot, reorganize. You keep going until you find something that works.

Regardless, sometimes you still wind up getting your ass kicked 55-7 in the state high school football championship game.

Remember to Keep Going

So, when you are struggling with something, remember to keep going. That is where character comes from especially when no one is around. Even more important for self employed individuals and business owners.
