In the beginning, doing all the work myself was the only option. I learned invaluable skills—plumbing, electrical work, and more. It began as a necessity in small-town living, but it laid the foundation for understanding every aspect of my investments.
2. Resources Are Your Allies
From Black and Decker books to the vast world of the internet, resources have been crucial. They guide you through the intricate details, like running a 3-way switch in an 1880s house. Accepting help is a strength, not a weakness.
3. Acceptance and Truth
Understanding that some things can’t be changed without blowing the budget or timeline is crucial. Accepting the truth about a property’s condition and strategically improving safety and aesthetics is a practical approach.
4. Flexibility Is Key
Plans change. Opening a wall in a property is like opening Pandora’s box. Adapting to unforeseen circumstances and embracing flexibility has been a key factor in navigating the ups and downs.
5. Decisiveness Matters
Making decisions promptly reduces stress and streamlines execution. Having a plan and eliminating unnecessary decision-making processes has significantly improved my efficiency.
6. Transferable Skills
Skills acquired in one industry can seamlessly transfer to another. I’ve applied knowledge from working at a software company to parenting and leadership, showcasing the power of adaptable skills.
7. The Importance of WHOs
Identifying the right people is crucial. Learning from my dad’s experiences, both positive and negative, helped me make strategic decisions in my own journey. Surrounding myself with reliable contractors, property managers, and partners has proven to be a game-changer.
